It was a beautiful Friday morning. There I was in my pj’s, hot steaming coffee within reach, curled up on the couch under the window, looking out over the living room. Soaking up the beauty. The calendar told me it was the first day of summer break.
The picture of that morning is framed in a golden list and hung on the walls of my motherhood-gallery.
Zarah was sitting at the little art table. Folding about a 1000 boxes, flowers and other gifts for friends and family. That morning she taught Boaz how to fold 16-squares. The whole summer long she has been creating, coloring and crafting. And climbing trees of course.
She didn’t stop twirling either. I hope she never will.
Zarah, our princess, what a beautiful girl she is. Daily I’m just amazed about Gods handiwork when I look at her.
When she is sitting there, you can see the wheels of her brain turning.
Or that moment she is forced to make a hard decision (like whether she wants her hair in a ponytail or not), she is so grown-up to stay calm and breath and maybe even say it’s too hard for her right now.
She is overwhelmed with compassion and ready to take action when she hears that there are kids in this world who can’t ever play, because they are working as slaves.
She puts on a cd, as loud as possible and sings and danced and let herself go.
She comes home from school and ask if it’s ok if she takes a moment alone, cause there was a little too much social interaction that day.
As a birthday gift from her friends she asks for money (instead of gifts), so she can give to others who don’t have the resources to celebrate their birthday.
She plays hours and hours with her siblings: Lego’s, coloring, reading books and pretend play.
She runs over the house of her friend and becomes this beautiful friend, because she is able to receive a magnificent friendship from this girl.
She radiates joy and adventure and hope, and all that at the same time. She fuels all of us to be joyful and hopeful. To keep going, since there might be more beauty around the corner.
Zarah, our princess went on a trip this summer. Together with Boaz and Peter, she got on the plane and flew to Austin. Boaz and she spent over a week with several friends. Our little, big girl, on the other side of the ocean. It was long, it was much, but how she enjoyed it! And how she just beamed and soaked it all in.
Zarah, our princess, she came back, and just went on like nothing ever happened. She takes her bike. She endures the rain. She speaks Dutch. She makes friends. She makes life happen.
Once in a while she will talk about Austin. And how in Texas there is always summer. About the pool. And school. Or her friends. About the chick-fil-a and other common stuff.
And she’ll turn around and go on with what she is doing. Like Austin never happened. Or maybe, I’m wrong. Maybe she just treats it for what it is, a fond memory, a part of her life, an essential element of wlho she became and will become.
Oh my, did I already say she is a breathtaking piece of art?! (I warned you!)
Zarah, our princess. Sometime during the summer break, around the time the heath was starting to turn purple, she turned six. Our oldest girl, six.
She invited her grandparents and uncle. Biked herself to ‘t Weide Veld and played, climbed, danced, twirled, ate pizza and roasted marshmallows. A few days later she invited her friends for an ultimate camping-party. They built a huge tent, went for a nature-hunt, made art from their found treasures and made their dinner above a fire.
